Knitting pattern: Foraois Beanie and Neckwarmer set. Foraois (pronounced FUR-eesh) is the Irish Gaelic word for forest, the inspiration for the Foraois Beanie Set. As a knitter and designer from the Aran Islands, Ireland, I love taking elements of traditional Aran knitting, like twisted and cable stitches, and applying them to more modern styles.
This lovely pattern set was originally published in Knotions online magazine, and has been fully tested and tech edited. Publishing rights have returned to me, and I am delighted to offer the pattern for sale here : )
Two pdfs are provided, one for the hat, and one for the neckwarmer. These can be printed at home, or opened on a computer, tablet or mobile device for paper-free knitting. Both items are knit in the round, using circular knitting needles (US 7 & 8/4.5mm & 5mm sizes suggested). Both charts and written instructions are included.
I would describe the level of difficulty as medium - you have to pay attention to the cabled section, but the beanie works up quickly, and the cabling becomes easier as the ‘trees’ grow; the crown is worked in soothing reverse stockinette. The companion neckwarmer (in a separate file) is even quicker to knit up - and one 100g skein should provide enough yarn for both knits (but please check the yardage!) Aran weight or worsted weight yarn is required, with 108-120 yds/99-110m needed.
The bare branches of a deciduous tree, the plush foliage of a conifer, and the soft round shrubs growing beneath the canopy are suggested by the repeating cable motif, creating ‘trees’ similar to that found in traditional Irish woodland.
The unisex design is ideal for gift knitting, or for using up that special skein of worsted or Aran weight yarn.
Notes:
The beanie is knit in the round.
The repeating motif is worked over 20 sts, so enlarging or reducing the size will need 20 more (or less) sts.
If working fewer or additional 20 st repeats, stitch counts in the crown decreases will vary.
The tallest of the ‘trees’ deliberately has a more irregular shape, to suggest organic matter.
The crown decrease section takes 3”(7.5cm), so you can modify the depth of the hat by continuing the main body to your desired length. You can even create a slouchy beanie by knitting approximately 12” (30cm) before starting the crown decreases.
With thanks to Studio Donegal for providing yarn support (the hats pictured were knit in Donegal Wool Spinning Company worsted wool yarn, shade 3657. Please note that the pattern is currently only available in English.

All my items are wrapped in crepe paper for free; if you would like sturdy wrapping for a festive occasion; please choose the gift wrapping option when ordering and let me know any special requirements (e.g. Christmas gift/birthday gift).
All of my knitted accessories (except items which have stuffing, like charms or baubles) can be machine-washed on a gentle wool wash at 30 degrees, or hand washed if you prefer. Certain items, such as cafetieres and tea-cosies, have been knitted in a more hard-wearing wool/acrylic mix: these can be washed in a regular machine wash at 40 degrees.
I aim to post your item on the following business day.
Absolutely! Just let me know the address of your gift recipient, and I will happily post it there directly, with a handwritten card containing the message of your choice.
I would recommend paying a little extra for registered post (which includes tracking) if this is a concern. If your (international) order has not arrived 30 days after shipping, please get in touch.
- I believe that wool is one of the most environmentally-friendly fibres in the world; being renewable and biodegradable. Most of my knits are made using natural fibres; with the exception of knits which need to be machine-washable (such as tea cosies).
- I take care to wrap your order in biodegradable materials (crepe paper and wool tie). Shipping bags are not always biodegradable; but this option is used when available. Shipping bags are recyclable in most countries.
- A packing slip is not included, to save on paper waste, and duplicating information already available online.
