Knitting pattern: instant download pdf. The Andes beanie is knit in the round, using one size of circular needles (US10; or 6mm). It is a modern take on a traditional Aran motif, and gives impressive results for what are easy to follow instructions! This pattern would suit improver knitters who would like to try an all-over motif, or experienced knitters who enjoy seeing a pattern flow from ribbing to crown.
The hat is sized for an adult, but instructions are given on adjusting the stitch count to create a smaller or larger hat. Gauge is not hugely important for this beanie; the fabric has some stretch and is a forgiving fit.
This hat was written for Drops Andes yarn; but should give a good result with a similar chunky yarn. One 100g skein should be enough for one hat, I would suggest a requirement of 95 metres/105 yards of yarn. A cable needle will also make the pattern easy to work for beginners, but experienced knitters can do without it. Also required are a stitch marker (to show the beginning of the row), and a knitter's sewing needle, for weaving in the ends when you are finished.
The hat is seamless, as it is knit in the round, and is super soft and comfortable to wear! This hat is sized to suit an adult head, and measures around 18 inches/46 cm in circumference (unworn). From brim to crown it measures 8 inches/21 cm unworn.
Please note that the pattern is currently only available in English.

All my items are wrapped in crepe paper for free; if you would like sturdy wrapping for a festive occasion; please choose the gift wrapping option when ordering and let me know any special requirements (e.g. Christmas gift/birthday gift).
All of my knitted accessories (except items which have stuffing, like charms or baubles) can be machine-washed on a gentle wool wash at 30 degrees, or hand washed if you prefer. Certain items, such as cafetieres and tea-cosies, have been knitted in a more hard-wearing wool/acrylic mix: these can be washed in a regular machine wash at 40 degrees.
I aim to post your item on the following business day.
Absolutely! Just let me know the address of your gift recipient, and I will happily post it there directly, with a handwritten card containing the message of your choice.
I would recommend paying a little extra for registered post (which includes tracking) if this is a concern. If your (international) order has not arrived 30 days after shipping, please get in touch.
- I believe that wool is one of the most environmentally-friendly fibres in the world; being renewable and biodegradable. Most of my knits are made using natural fibres; with the exception of knits which need to be machine-washable (such as tea cosies).
- I take care to wrap your order in biodegradable materials (crepe paper and wool tie). Shipping bags are not always biodegradable; but this option is used when available. Shipping bags are recyclable in most countries.
- A packing slip is not included, to save on paper waste, and duplicating information already available online.

As described - looks like a great pattern

Really happy with this pattern and how it knit up. The cables are just so pretty and though I don’t love knitting cables these were well worth it. I was very happy with the crown decreases too - especially in a bulky yarn it can be hard to get those looking good and sitting nice and flat, and these were perfect. The only thing I’d have liked is row gauge. Mine worked out perfectly in the yarn I used but I often use a different weight yarn for a pattern. It’s easy enough to adapt stitch count (and the pattern tells you how), but I’d like to know if you could add another full pattern repeat, if using a lighter yarn for example, and row gauge would help with that. But not a major problem, and I have the yarn to make more, which I’ll definitely do!

I love the hat (and really enjoyed knitting with the luxuriously soft yarn I chose - Plymouth Baby Alpaca Grande - since Drops yarn isn’t sold in the US.) The pattern was very well written and easy to follow. I inly found one small error - Row 2 of the decrease section says 36 sts remain and I had 35 after counting 3 times. The rest of the pattern worked out as written so I think it is simply a typo. I’ve struggled with a cable pattern before that abbreviated when to put the cable hook in front or back, so I appreciated this pattern writing it out each time! A minor disappointment is that I wish the hat covered more of my ears. I had 32 grams of Yarn left, so I probably knit too tightly and will add 2 rows to the ribbing & use size 10.5 needle for the body of the hat next time. The hat is pretty & I recommend this pattern.
